Friday, November 20th, 2015: Over 20 tenants of Maverick Street Realty in Boston took refuge in a the basement of a church while their landlord continues to delay repairs to their collapsed building. The landlord will no longer fund hotels for the tenants, so they are now sheltered by the church. Support their RIGHT TO RETURN home by joining in a CANDELIGHT PROCESSION on Wednesday, 11/25, the day before Thanksgiving at 7pm. Demand that Maverick St. Realty make the repairs needed to their home after MONTHS of delay.

City Life/Vida Urbana members joined youth leaders from the Keep It 100% for Egleston campaign and other Washington Corridor residents at last week's Boston Redevelopment Authority meeting to define a "master plan" for the corridor. We continued to lift up the demands for REAL AFFORDABILITY and an END TO DISPLACEMENT along the corridor. We also know that a JUST CAUSE EVICTION LAW, which we're pushing for with other Right to the City Boston coalition groups, would help protect renters in this vulnerable but very vocal area. "As developers buy real estate, some have issued eviction notices to entire buildings, ordering residents to leave or pay up to $1,000 more per month, according to attorneys who work with the advocacy group City Life/Vida Urbana to help residents fight evictions...A group of longtime East Boston residents gathers every Wednesday night in the basement of a Paris Street church. What do we want? JUST CAUSE EVICTION LAW in Boston! On Saturday, October 3rd, we kicked off the citywide campaign boldly and beautifully. TEN city councilors and candidates spoke at the gathering in support of the proposed law, including Presley, Wu, Flaherty, Murphy, Baker, Jackson and Yancey and candidates George, Campbell and Clemons. The movement is rolling for Just Cause! Thanks to Right to the City Boston and the Boston Tenant Coalition for pulling off an unstoppable kickoff!

“This is an area of poor people, working people, but we work for low salaries,” Egleston resident Rita Alcaráz said. “The majority of us have two jobs to pay our rent. And so you come and build apartments for people who earn $60,000 or $70,000 a year. Only in our dreams can we afford that.”
