City Life/Vida Urbana is a grassroots community organization committed to fighting for racial, social, economic justice and gender equality by building working class power through direct action, coalition building, education and advocacy. Through organizing working class people of diverse races and nationalities â€“ tenants, immigrants, public school parents and other low-income people â€“ we promote individual empowerment, develop community leaders, and build collective power to effect systemic change and transform society.

Come visit us at: 284 Amory Street, 1st Floor (take elevator from Ground Floor to 1st) Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

Directions: Orange Line to Stonybrook Station - Go left out of station and walk to Amory Street; take a right down Amory Street. #284 Amory Street is on your left down about a block. Parking lot in front of a large renovated brewery. Go through the doorway with the sign "The Brewery". Take the elevator up one flight to the First Floor. Go left. Walk down long hallway with a few stairs (there's a wheelchair elevator); go left again. Go right. Go left again. Go left and you're there at our new office.

CLVU asked the YWCA To Do The Right Thing

Since 1990, Aswalos House in Grove Hall, Dorchester was one of the YWCA's unique, important programs, serving homeless teens who were young mothers. The Aswalos House program was special and got results. Young mothers took parenting classes, got their GED's and learned skills to live on their own with their children. Aswalos House provided structure, safety and opportunity for self-improvement to a very high risk population. In July 2006 the young women living at Aswalos House with their young children were told by the YWCA that it was selling the property and closing the program. Thanks to tenant organizers at City Life/Vida Urbana, these women came together in solidarity and were able to negotiate with the YWCA to delay their no-fault evictions until October and provide them new homes, and thus, some safety and security, at least for the near future.

Our Mission

City Life/Vida Urbana is a community-based organization established by community members, with its base in the working class neighborhoods of Boston. We are committed to fighting for racial, social and economic justice and building the power of the working class through direct action, coalition building, education and advocacy. We are building a democratically-run organization that is multiracial, bilingual (Spanish/English) and welcoming sexual diversity. Our priority is to develop leaders and help build the power of youth, women, Latinos and members of the working class.
