| NEWS AT THE FRONT |
Saturday, January 30, City Life/Vida Urbana held a candlelight vigil in Dedham to show support for Roberto Velasquez, his wife and 2 children and urge the Deutsche Bank/HomEq to stop eviction proceedings. 75 people showed up to support them. The family could not afford to pay the high mortgage payment of $4800/month on a house bought six years ago, and offered to pay rent, Deutsche Bank/HomEq refused to take rent. Since the vigil, Deutsche Bank/HomEq has entered into negotiations with a non-profit bank to buy the Velasques house.
Brewington Victory
After 2 years of defending themselves from eviction, the Brewingtons, a blind couple, strapped with a predatory mortgage loan were hours away from having an eviction order served during the holiday season. CLVU held a vigil right before and after Christmas 2009 with over 70 supporters showing up to defend the family, protest bank bonuses, and a hold a holdiday celebration with a social justice theme. A non-profit bank, Boston Community Capital, made an offer to buy the home at current real value with Deutsche Bank/One West. The Brewingtons are now in the process of buying back their home.
Coyne Victory
The Coyne family had been evicted when they contacted CL/VU. On Dec. 23rd, Peter Coyne reoccupied his home with CLVU’s support. The police forced him out later that afternoon. In protest, CLVU held 2 vigils to urge that he be allowed to reenter, pay rent and eventually be able to buy back his home. Finally Bank of America was willing to negotiate with a non-profit bank to buy house at current real value and help the family buy back their home.
Shepton Street Blockade
On Feb, 19th. over 65 people came out to defend the Nguyen family from eviction, and get the JP Morgan Chase bank to reconsider and negotiate with a nonprofit bank. Just before the rally, City Life/Vida Urbana staff heard that nonprofit bank had made an offer to buy back the home and sell it back to the Nguyen family. Faced with potential blockade the bank backed off the eviction.
